Sensory Arts Walks

54321 Sensory Art Walks were funded by The Mill in Walthamstow as part of their 5 Ways to Well-being ‘Milling About programme hoping to reach those people most isolated by the Covid-19 Pandemic.

This is an activity which can be done as a group or alone. It can be done outside as you walk, in your garden or even in your own home. We’ll create an artistic response from the world around us.

It can be a great way to help yourself feel calm, increase your memory and feel more connected to your surroundings. You can choose in which order you choose your senses to operate. This might depend on how dominant one sense is over another or what the environment around you lends too.

In the following videos you’ll see we will be walking alone and taking into account our senses. We’ve provided two different approaches in different outdoor spaces to the same activity.

An Urban Walk

Using the number system of 54321 we will take a structured walk in an urban area and see what we can find as we walk. Using the information observed we’ll create some art.

5 things we hear

4 colours we see

3 Textures we can touch

2 things we can smell

1 thing we can taste

A Walk in the Park

Using our senses in less specific order but being aware of them as they arise we’ll take a calm walk in a park. With the information obtained and a found object for the ‘touch’ sense we’ll create some art.
