Everyday Heroes
Worthy
The portraits seen here are all submitted by NBAM participants during Worthy week 1 – we asked them to think about who their everyday heroes were and why they were so special to them. In a year spent indoors did our ideas of heroes change.
My Son
“He gives me a reason to wake up. A purpose to live for and someone who loves me and looks to me for the answers. His quirky little ways make me laugh everyday even when I’m having a bad day. His loving little way, as he cuddles up to me if he feels sad or lonely. The way he tells me funny jokes that are not at all funny if someone has said them. Who has given me a reason to keep living.”
Hermes E10 Erik The Delivery Man in our area
“He works with a warmth and shiny energy about him. He is always polite, pleasant, smiling and even when I found his truck blocked today he didn’t come across as angry or impatient. He serves a medal for the way he has collected and delivered parcels in a very difficult time for many in this pandemic. He has brought and taken things for me and I appreciate his enthusiasm and admire him.”
Neesha
“My worthy nomination is for Neesha Badhan as she works tirelessly for service users and disabled, older people etc. She arranges art exhibitions, walks and places of interest to visit and is constantly arranging new projects. She is a very caring person. Once I tripped in Walthamstow market face down. Split open my forehead, blood gushing. My 2 knees were also, pain everywhere. I was in shock. Neesha phoned for an ambulance, stayed with me until they arrived, followed down to the hospital and waited till I was discharged. It took quite a few hours, but not once said she had to leave. To me, that is over and above her duties. I believe she always has the best interest at heart. She deserves some recognition for all her efforts. My painting of her does her no justice at all, but painting people I’ve not mastered yet.”
Corporal Charles Alfred Newman
“He served in the First World War at the Battle of Somme 1916 April 17th, some million combatants fought against each other, my grandfather survived, but his brother was a prisoner of war. He died years later in 1934 from yellow fever that had contracted, burying all the dead in 1919.”
My Father
“Always helping others, kind, generous, loving. An inspiration to look up to, hard working, passion about his job.”
My Cats
“My cats are my heroes because they are always there, they don’t judge me, they just love me – as long as I love them back and feed them nice food. During Covid it was stressful going out to work, but getting home to purring cats made the stress go away. They are very comfy and cuddly and won’t let you ignore them. They want attention and I have to think about them rather than my problems. They follow me about the house and want to be in the room I’m in. They are friendly little heroes.”
Talula (Me)
“I like to help people in any way that i can. I work as part time carer. I volunteer at a Foodbank, where I worked on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve and Day serving food to the community. I teach art and craft in the community and this allows me to meet and motivate people from all walks of life, ages and cultures. I like to meet people and have a chat.”
My Delivery Driver
“During the pandemic I really relied on delivery drivers in general but one in particular was so friendly and would also be smiling when he arrived. At a time when we hardly had any human contact it was really nice to feel like a person again. Delivery drivers are often working on low wages and moaning about online so rarely do they get the appreciation they deserve which is why my delivery driver though I never knew his name is my everyday hero choice.”
Patsy
“Patsy helped me through the last year when I had two cysts in my throat. I had problems swallowing and sometimes eating food. He helped me so much. He is a very good friend of the family. He meant so much to me I owe him many thanks.“
My Son Keith
“When I had recovered and I came home from hospital they were there for me. They helped me so much through it all. I want to thank the two of those for being there for me.”
Kamala Harris
“She is an inspiration!“
