Worthy

An exhibition by local residents considering our human worth and value.

Throughout the lockdown we worked with 16 participants who were all digitally excluded from the online arts offers, which sprung up all over the place.

We devised a postal project called Worthy which would discuss with participants ideas of worth and asked them what they thought about it in various ways.

All of the art work you see around Crate is a result of input from our participants. There are 5 different pieces to find.

If you’d like to donate to our project, you can do so via Square.

We’re a non-profit arts organisation and deeply appreciate your support!

In our miniature house you can see small versions of artwork.

Why do we associate size with value? Could tiny artwork be just as valuable as large artwork? Do plastic, wood, paint and stickers have a different value in your mind?

What’s the difference between a toy house and a miniature masterpiece?

All the art work hanging on the walls and easels are miniaturised versions of our participants’ art.

Why do some people get the glory and others get overlooked? What does that say about us as a society? Are there people you know who are your heroes? Rarely do we see the faces of everyday people drawn by one another displayed in such wonderfully ornate frames.

When you think of grand exhibitions often the people who take up the large portraits were of financial status and could afford to have this kind of work created of them.

COVID Patterns

Why do we choose to repeat some kinds of patterns and choice of colours – do you see them occur in everyday life in places of authority and power?

We posed this question to our participants and then gave them free rein to experiment with new mark making which felt more authentic to them.

Fridge magnets – love them or hate them? Collectable or tacky? Where does the value judgement come from? In a year where we could all go nowhere, we took some time to reflect on where we could be.

These magnets are all images by our participants of their precious places, as well as additional designs- read their stories and enjoy their precious places with them.

They’re also exhibited in several different walls of the Crate Buildingcan you spot them all?

Poundshop Garden

We have created a miniature garden in a tiny dead space, using found, hand-made objects by our participants and cheaply bought ornaments.

It questions how ignored and unnoticed spaces might be seen as having as much worth as the grandeur of traditional public spaces.

Looking at how people decorate or present their own front gardens, putting their private space in public view was the starting point for this installation, which led us to rejecting formality in favour of a more playful approach.
